The Man Who Provides And Is Not There

You are not a bad husband. That is what makes this hard to see. You work, you provide, you do not cheat, you show up to most of the games. By the standard you were handed, you are doing fine.

And yet there is a distance in your house you cannot account for. Your wife is polite. Your teenager answers in syllables. Conversations are logistics — who is driving, what time, did you pay it. You are running a household and no longer sharing a life.

Here is what happened. You outsourced the relationship work. She has her friends for the deep conversation. The kids have their screens for company and their coaches for character. You handle the money and the roof. Everybody's needs got met by somebody, just not by you.

03 · Insourced

You are carrying your marriage and your children yourself. Use these fourteen days to sharpen and to teach it to another man.

47 · Drifting

You have not quit, but you have handed pieces of your marriage and your children to other people and other systems. This is the most common place a man lands. It is also the easiest to reverse.

812 · Outsourced

Someone or something else is running your marriage and your children for you. Nothing here is unfixable. But it will take fourteen straight days of small, unimpressive obedience.

Fifteen minutes that are not logistics

The first thing to rebuild is not romance. It is conversation that costs something. Most married men have not had a fifteen-minute talk with their wife about anything other than schedule, money, or the children in a very long time.

Tonight you sit down — actual chairs, facing each other, no television — and you ask her two questions. 'What has been the hardest part of your week?' and then, after she answers, 'What else?'

The 'what else' is the entire technique. The first answer is the public answer. The second answer is the real one. Almost no man ever asks for the second answer, which is why almost no wife gives it.

Two rules. Do not solve anything. The urge to fix is how a man converts intimacy into a work ticket, and she has learned not to bring you problems because you turn them into projects. And do not defend yourself if part of the hard week is you. Say 'tell me more about that.' That is all.

Fifteen minutes. Every day this week. It is the smallest possible unit of a marriage that is still alive.

The fifteen-minute conversation

Sit facing her, no screens. Ask 'What was hardest this week?' then 'What else?' Do not fix, do not defend.

What was her second answer — the one after 'what else'?

Where did you feel the urge to fix or defend?

Today's commitment

Tonight I listened past the first answer.

The Contempt Audit — 8 Signals and Their Replacements

Mark the ones you did in the last seven days. The replacement is what you say instead, next time.

1. The eye-roll → 'I'm frustrated and I don't want to take it out on you.'

2. The sigh before answering → 'Give me a second, I'm at the end of my rope.'

3. Correcting her in front of the kids → say nothing now; raise it privately later.

4. The joke at her expense for a laugh → make yourself the punchline instead.

5. 'Calm down' or 'you're overreacting' → 'This clearly matters. Tell me the rest.'

3 more tools included: The Letter to Your Wife — Template, The Repair Structure, One-on-One Scripts By Child.
