The Outsourced Soul
You did not walk away from God. That is not what happened. What happened is quieter than that, and worse in a way, because it never required a decision.
You got busy. The church took over the teaching. A podcast took over the thinking. A worship playlist took over the singing. Your wife took over the praying, because she was better at it, and because it was easier to let her. Somewhere in there you stopped being a man who has a faith and became a man who consumes one.
That is what outsourcing looks like. It never feels like rebellion. It feels like delegation. And delegation works fine for your calendar and your lawn and your taxes. It does not work for your soul, because the thing you delegate, you stop being able to do.

Measure
The Audit — 5 of 12 questions
Answer yes or no. Do not soften anything. Count one point for every yes. The number is not a verdict on you as a man; it is a map of where the work is.
- 01My wife prays out loud in our home more often than I do.Y / N
- 02I could not tell you the last passage of Scripture I read on my own, without a podcast or a plan reading it to me.Y / N
- 03My children have never heard me pray for them by name.Y / N
- 04My spiritual input is almost entirely audio — sermons, podcasts, worship — and almost nothing written or read.Y / N

0–3 · Insourced
You are carrying your own spiritual life yourself. Use these fourteen days to sharpen and to teach it to another man.
4–7 · Drifting
You have not quit, but you have handed pieces of your own spiritual life to other people and other systems. This is the most common place a man lands. It is also the easiest to reverse.
8–12 · Outsourced
Someone or something else is running your own spiritual life for you. Nothing here is unfixable. But it will take fourteen straight days of small, unimpressive obedience.

Say it out loud
The first thing a man loses is his voice. Not his belief — his voice. He still believes; he just has not said any of it out loud in years, and belief that is never spoken slowly becomes belief that is never tested, and belief that is never tested becomes an opinion.
So we start here, before Scripture, before habit, before anyone else is involved. You are going to say what you actually believe, out loud, alone, in a room with the door closed. Not the version you would say at church. The version that is true at 2 a.m.
It will feel absurd. Do it anyway. There is a reason every serious tradition makes men speak their confession rather than think it. Thinking is private and revisable. Speech commits you. The moment you hear your own voice say a thing, you have taken a position, and something in you begins to organize itself around that position.
Keep it short. Four or five sentences. What you believe about God, about yourself, about what you have done with the last five years. Then say the hardest one: the thing you believe but have been avoiding saying, because saying it would require you to change something on Monday.
Anchor move · 10 min
Speak your confession alone
Find a closed door. Say out loud, in your own words: what you believe about God, and where you have gone quiet. Five sentences is enough.
Write the five sentences you said out loud.
What is the one sentence you almost did not say?
Write it here anyway.
Today's commitment
Today I said out loud what I actually believe.

Reference tool
The Family Altar Script
Read it word for word the first time. Four minutes. Do not explain yourself before you start.
1. 'Before we eat, I want to read something.'
2. Read three to five verses. Suggested starting rotation: Psalm 23, Psalm 1, Mark 1:35, Ephesians 4:29-32, Philippians 4:4-7, Psalm 121, Romans 12:9-13.
3. Ask one question and let it be quiet: 'What is one thing that was hard today?'
4. Pray, naming each person: 'God, thank you for this table. Be with [name] in [specific thing]. Make me a better husband and father than I was today. Amen.'
5. Eat. Do not add commentary. Do not ask how it went.
